DIGITAL DAZIBAO - PASSAGE
Preface
As part of this assignment, I was tasked with selecting a particular passage which I would like to share which is exmplary of the book and its theme.
I therefore figured that the best passage representative of the book would be an excerpt of the line struggle over the intepretation of the "get rich slogan". Seeing as how it was the common argument which was persistent throughout the book through to its very end.
Selected Passage
""Fine. Show me." “Show you what?” “Show me where the get-rich competition is written in the Party documents and where it says the ones who get rich deserve honor and the ones who go broke will be despised.”
"You, you! Don't take everything so literally."
You are the one who used those exact words in the public meeting and implemented them literally in your actions. You say you're worried about us! Actually we are really worried about you."
A ran down Jinf'a's spine. In an affected tone he said slowly, "Come on. This kind of talk is useless. Let's get back to the slogans. In short, no changes, no additions. We'll stick to the leadership's formulations. Supporting industry and resisting American aggression in Korea is important, but you know that peasants only care about eating and sleeping. There's no room in their mind for that kind of stuff."
Don't make such gross generalizations," Daquan said in a milder tone. "And besides, we Party members should educate those peasants who think that way. I never thought about these things before either. Only when I went to Beijing. and saw things with my own eyes did I began to get the picture.""(Ran pp 168-170)[1]
